Procedure Overview: Put a penny on a piece of paper. Take a plastic dropper and have someone place a single drop of water on the penny. Then see how many drops you can put on the penny till the water overflows.
Prediction:I thought that 5 was going to be the most it could hold because i thought that the drops would cover 1/5 of the surface then overflow on the 6th drop.
Outcome: The result of this experiment was shocking. Jeremy and i did this 3 times. Once we got 10 drops. The second time we got 12 drops and the last time we got 13. This was a surprise and definatly different then what my class and I was expecting.
Explaination: This outcome occured because water has surface tension and capillary action. These properties make water sticky and its molocules attracted to each other. Because its able to clump together it forms drops. The water on the penny stuck together instead of spreading out like i was thinking it would.
