Earthquake Webquest

1. Earthquakes tend to happen in specific places. When talking about geologically they usually happen along plate boundaries. When talking about geographically they occur along the western coast of Americas and Eastern Asia coast.

2. I think they occur here because in these areas plates meet. At the areas where plates meet faults form. Faults are where tension in the Earth builds up and earthquakes happen.

3. This area is called the Ring of Fire

4. An earthquake that happened closest to Manitou Springs was on Ute Pass. It was 3 small earthquakes that occured on saturday january 18,1997.For a few seconds only people could feel the earthquake. It had a magnitude of 3.1.

5.The earthquake i researched also had a magnitude of 3.1. It happened on thursday the 22 at 4:23pm. This ground shaking event was in Hawaii. The exact location was 19.818°N, 155.643°W. This area is actually very common for earthquakes. More than 5 have happened in just the past week. The hypocentral depth was 11 km ( 7 miles). My earthquake was felt but im not exactly sure for how long. It didnt leave any big damages to the surrounding area.

6.A few ways people can protect themselves from earthquakes is by keeping an emergency kit. The kit should include non-perishable food, flashlight and any other important thing you can think of. During the earthquake stay away from glass such as windows and watch out for things that could fall.Try to find a place under a stable structure that can protect you from falling objects or anything else. These are someways to protect yourself in an earthquake.
